Haliburton Adventure Base Log of
Winter Camp Feb 24 Departure Day We departed from Whitby at approximately 9:30 p.m. before we could begin our adventure we had to stop at Scouter Brian's condo. While we were at the condo we made ourselves at home. We watched TV and waited for the Scouter to complete his meal. After we finally left his domain we journeyed on to the local A&P. While we were there we picked up hamburgers, pasta, tacos, pancakes and sausages. Also, we bought some eggplant, avocados and jalapenos peppers. We purchased these even though we were not advised to. Our budget was exceeded so we had to return the instant "macaroni-pasta-in-a cup" product, sorry Liptons. J After stopping to pick up our snowshoes, we made our way on the three-hour journey, however it took much longer than that. We proceeded to stop for some coffee and donuts at Manchester where Scouter Brian would keep us waiting for 15 minutes while he purchased 25 TimeBits and coffee all-around. He came back with a long story about how the last customer won $20,000 from the cup coupon and how the lady lives next door to Laurie, Jon and Snowy and that Snowy picks up garbage from his parents home. Some 45 minutes later, we stopped at Subway for a sub but they were already closed. What he hey, they should be open all night in a town like Minden. Then we stopped under a canopy gas station where he "self-served" an hour rest stop. At two in the morning we continued our journey. Finally, we arrived at Camp Samac - Haliburton Adventure Base camp at 4 o'clock prepared for the 40-minute hike in, in the rain. We were very fortunate to arrive with all of our equipment in one piece. (As we discovered in the morning, we had lost our stewing beef, sausages and apple cider.) Finally, we arrived to our cabin and retired for the evening. Feb 25 Settling Down and Activity Day We woke up at 11:30am to find that our Scouter had left us. When he came back, he was cold, wet and had meat and apple cider that we had lost in the previous night. But to his surprise we had contemplating making pancakes and sausages, but only after going out to find wood and kindling for our stove. Good job we waited for Scouter Brian to come back with the sausages. After finishing our fantastic breakfast we wanted to see if skating would be possible. To our surprise the lake appeared to be not frozen, when we ventured on to the ice we discovered that the ice was indeed frozen, but the top of it was extremely slushy. We attempted to go to a nearby island but on our way found large holes in the ice. The thing that really made us wonder was deer prints near the holes. We attempted to skate and play ice hockey however we became very wet. Then we decided to try out our version of the biathlon by throwing snowballs at a wooden circle we found. We discovered a plate and old birdhouse and thought it might be fun to throw javelins at them. We also discovered that we have really bad aim. Finally, we tossed this plate that we shaped like a boomerang out to sea but to our despair it didn't return. We thought we should retrieve it when it stumbled upon us to give curling a try. Unfortunately, all we could find was a bucket, but it is extremely difficult to play curling with one stone. Finally, we realized it was time to go back to the cabin for lunch after finding some extra firewood. We enjoyed a lunch of beef stew or (road kill) stew as Scouter Brian prefers. It was a tangy zip of mixed fruits and vegetables we didn't know could be used. Plantains, avocados, eggplants, okra, leek, asparagus, and walnuts. Now you understand while he calls it road kill. Ok, actually it was made by Bill from stewing beef, onion, garlic, eggplant, potatoes, carrot, flour, salt, fresh ground black pepper and oriental spice mix. After lunch, we began our snow shoeing expedition. Considering, none of us had ever been, it was a great success. Brian told us to go and make a quinzhee. It wasn't very good but we could've slept in it if we wanted to. For dinner we enjoyed some delightful tacos, burritos, fajitas, and enchiladas even though they all appear to be the same, they are different. We then had a little version of casino night when we played craps; black jack, roulette and we used Brian as a slot machine. As you already notice, this is too much fun for one day. We went to bed at 9:00. Feb 26 Dealing with the Neighbours and Packing Out. What's the deal with Al's Diner? Scouter Brian insisted we go there. |
